A woman went to a fortune teller to consult the future of her wealthy husband. With a great degree of concern the psychic announced “Your husband will be found dead before the end of this week!”
Apparently unperturbed by the shocking news the wife then blurted out “Do you think I will get away with it?”
Now I will try to be a little controversial for writing this but I have always been uncomfortable at the thought that I completely have no control over my life; emphasis on the word completely. The line that says all the world’s a stage and that we are merely actors makes me believe that I at least have time to rehearse right?
I once worked with someone who told me that he was born of poor parents; his father a farmhand and a housewife for a mother. I remember him telling me that he made this vow never to go through life at the same level of poverty as his parents did. As most Cinderella stories go he worked hard enough to be in a reputable sales position, earning commissions sometimes three times more than his basic pay and have the chance to give back to his parents conveniences they never had.
Unlike this friend of mine, most of us who have become entrapped by the whole concept of destiny would just be content on uttering the following phrases:
“I did not have proper education”
“I’m from the province, maybe my fate’s just to be here”
“I’m not as smart as everyone else, maybe this is my destiny”
If you try to look up the word “Destiny” it’s actually rooted from the Latin word “destinere” which literally means “to determine”. It is a verb to be taken progressively, not something pre-disposed. That’s the reason why I don’t believe in fortune tellers, horoscopes and feng shui. It is in plain Tagalog parlance a “hula”, a guess, a supposition. If you think of the word destiny in this same context would you really want to know in detail how your life will unfold up to the time you meet your maker?
Am I bordering on blasphemy you might ask? Truthfully speaking it’s the total opposite. Someone once said the greatest gift that God ever gave man is the power of free will.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE!
Where you are now has been the by-product of all your decisions, associations and actions. You can’t blame God for where you are and what you are enjoying or suffering. Are you currently in a low paying job with bosses who act as if you don’t even exist? Are you in an abusive relationship? Do you feel as if there isn’t a glimmer of hope in your future? You have a choice!
You decide to stay or go, be influenced or walk away. Yes the powers of influence by family, friends, education and environment are very strong but as Viktor Frankl noted no one can eventually push you into something that wasn’t your choice.
George Bernard Shaw once said he doesn’t believe in circumstances, he makes them! Don’t despair that your situation now is far from what you would want to imagine because where you will be five years from now will depend on the choices you will make today.
Your success, that elusive Mr. Right or that promotion is not written in the stars or in the palm of your hands on some pre-determined manner. It’s right there inside you and in the future that you will write with your actions and decisions. So don’t just sit there and sulk. Don’t wait for something to happen, start making things happen!
